Even in a home designed for sustainability, this kitchen stands out with its wine crate-cabinetry and recycled steel shelving. When we saw this kitchen on ReadyMade, we fell in love with its simple, eco-look. Then we fell for the people who live there, since they've committed themselves to green design.
Throughout the whole process, the owners/designers kept a blog, recording each room they remodeled, and the kitchen is a model of sustainability. The cabinets are made of old wooden wine crates. Although the rest of the home has cork flooring, they went with ceramic green and white checkerboard tiles in the kitchen.
Untreated wood from IKEA is used on the countertop and recyclable stainless steel shelving supports pots and pans. As for the appliances and lighting, all scored an A+ for energy efficiency. They don't have a dishwasher -- yet; the couple is having trouble finding one that meets their sustainability beliefs. They also hope to find a water-purifying system that can make the faucet water drinkable.
Best of all, they try to stock the kitchen with only local, non-chemical produce, which arrives every two weeks. Meals are served on recyclable glass plates. And any waste is fed to compost worms. How's that for a green kitchen?
