A dilapidated kitchen gets a new life with a few whimsical touches and a whole lot of white paint...Check out this great story about a stunning white kitchen makeover from our friends at CasaSugar!
Ashley Vaughn and her husband Andy of White Rabbit Studios have given their circa-1903 Huntsville, AL, home a top-to-bottom makeover. And now, it's time to tackle the kitchen.
Ashley told me that extensive water damage and poor upkeep made renovating the kitchen a challenge. However, their dedicated effort really shines through in these pictures of a stunning white kitchen makeover. Let's take a tour!

CasaSugar: What was the general state of the kitchen when you moved in?
Ashley Vaughn: It was gross! There was a bad leak that had rotted the roof; there was a puddle of pee (from a dog?) that had started seeping into the floors; the sink was draining into a 5 gallon paint bucket (plumbing was shot); we also found a rat and snake skeleton in the walls.

CS: What were your biggest challenges?
AV: The entire back end of the house (kitchen and bath) is an enclosed porch. The addition was not built and certainly not maintained very well. We had to completely re-build the interior of this space. The first set of contractors ended up screwing up a lot of work...so that ended up being the biggest problem. Luckily we made friends with the right people and everything was correctly restored.

CS: What was your strategy when it came to renovating the kitchen?
AV: Piece by piece it just came together. The only thing we knew for certain that we wanted was a black and white checkered floor. The rest just sort of fell into place!
CS: Tell me about all of the freestanding furniture.
AV: At first I wanted cabinets to run under all of the windows, but when I got the price tag ($10k, even for basic cabinetry) I started to think outside of the box. I was walking around in an antique store one day when I saw the free sanding cabinet pieces all together. I was on the phone with Andy (and I'm not kidding) I started tearing up. There was our kitchen...right in front of my eyes! We scored all three pieces for $1500!

CS: This hoosier cabinet is in amazing shape. Did it come this way?
AV: Yep! It was so bright and wonderful! We've definitely put some "life" on it, but it's an easy clean to get it looking like new again.
