Chairs For a Cause

These chairs really stand up to cancer: Proceeds from their auction go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, 20 top female designers partnered with SUITE New York as part of their Pink Wishbone Project to create custom cushions for 20 pink Hans Wegner Wishbone Chairs. The chairs and cushions are being auctioned off on CharityBuzz.com from now until October 28, 2010. One hundred percent of the proceeds will benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BRCF), and it's safe to say that 100% of the designs are downright inspired.

While Hans Wegner passed away in 2007, we think the Danish designer would have been pleased with the hyper-modern takes on his iconic 1949 chair. After all, he did say, "A chair is to have no backside. It should be beautiful from all sides and angles." (We think these fit the bill.)

This is what I call a "twofur": two for the price of one! First, you get the personal satisfaction of helping fund cancer research and secondly, you can get your hands on a one-of-a-kind piece of design history. The Hans Wegner Wishbone chair is a design classic in itself -- even owning a rare pink version would be a treat. Add a custom cushion by a leading designer, and these sweet seats will no doubt fetch a pretty penny.

The 20 designers covered just about every trend, material and inspiration. From the more demure (needlepoint from Emma Jane Pilkington) to the outrageous (A sea urchin-inspired pom-pom from Sara Rotman), these chairs are brimming with whimsy and glamour. Other notable designers who've lent their talents: Bunny Williams, a 30-year design veteran, Sheila Bridges, the mind behind the brilliant Harlem Toile, and the hyper-chic Lulu de Kwiatkowski, whose fabrics have been everywhere from Sex and the City to House Beautiful.

And if you've always wanted to own something shiny and gold from Kelly Wearstler, now's the time!

But if you don't score one of these charity chairs, you can still get a pink Wishbone chair at SUITE New York -- they'll be sold exclusively for the next year. And you can feel good about this purchase too -- 20% of the proceeds go to BRCF.
