Before the design world mourned Domino, there was Nest: A Quarterly of Interiors. Each Friday, we're posting one of our favorite homes from the late, great magazine.

This is a scanned excerpt from the article "Julian Schnabel, Decorator" from the Spring 2001 issue of Nest.

Speaking to Nest about his house in Montauk, the painter and filmmaker does not seem inclined to rattle on about decorating. Nevertheless he is very imaginative in this department -- so much so that Nest wants to be the first to acclaim Julian Schnabel as a great decorator.

His instinct is sure. The palette of colors he has chosen for his Standord White summer house may suit the White era, yet it strikes us as timelessly right. His feeling for playing with proportions, for space and how to accentuate it, for objects and their placements -- all mark him as one of us.
