The Amelanchier genus of trees and shrubs is native to much of North America. Amelanchier's common names include serviceberry, juneberry and shadblow. The white flowers open when the ground begins to thaw and the small red berries ripen in June. They are edible and delicious, their flavor somewhere in the realm of blueberry meets marzipan. Eat them fresh or put them in pies.
